Infrared Property Inspections - Almost Like Being Able to See Inside Walls, Roofs, Floors, Ceilings and Systems.

Articles written by Carl Brahe, Certified Home Inspector, Certified Commercial Inspector.

Common dangers to your health and home that may be hiding in your property that a home inspection may identify:

1. Expansive Soil - Colorado is home to expansive soil, commonly bentonite. The leading cause of foundation damage in this type of soil is uneven moisture. Drying soil can shift and crack your foundation as it shrinks. When moisture in applied the resulting swelling can crumble your foundation and actually break your house in two, if your basement is not properly framed.

2. Asbestos - It is estimated that over 180,000 home in Colorado built between 1960 and 1990 have vermiculite insulation that contains the deadly form of asbestos known as zonolite. This is only one of the many asbestos products used in construction before being banned.

Once thought of as a wonder material it has become a major health threat to all Americans. Exposure may lead to a form of cancer called Mesothelioma. Symptoms may not appear for 40 years, or more, after exposure.

3. Lead - Lead in even small quantities is toxic. It is one of the few naturally occurring minerals that has no use in the human body. It adversely affects red blood cells, nervous system, kidneys and reproductive system. Children may experience fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability, sleep disturbance, behavioral changes, developmental regression, clumsiness, vomiting, muscle irregularities, weakness and abdominal pain.

Lead was once used in many aspects of home building including paint that turns to dust and enters the body through breathing and skin. It was also used in solder in fresh water systems.

4. Mold - Water from plumbing leaks, flooding or even poor drainage can cause extensive damage to the structure of your house, but a deadly condition may exist as the result of improper clean-up. Mold and mildew can grow in the walls, ceiling, floor, soaked insulation or other left over moisture. Many adverse health conditions can result from exposure to mold.

5. Radon - Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that is common in Colorado. It is the number two cause of lung cancer in the US.

In some areas of the country, like Colorado, as many as one out of two homes has high levels of radon.
